Default Backup to iCloud or to computer

Apparently with IOS 5, I can choose to either backup to iCloud or to
my computer. But not both.

I guess I should every once in a while switch. I like belts and
suspenders with my backups.

Which do you prefer and why?

With my asymmetrical DSL line (5Mb down, 768Kb up), it would be foolish
for me to try to back up anything to a remote system.

[Isn't "cloud" just a new word for "mainframe?"]

AIUI backup to computer is not automatic when you use iCloud but can be done
manually without reference to iCloud.

No, that was computer.
iCloud is a new term for "Skydrive", " external data bank", "Web storage
facility".

I sure don't want no damn cloud descending on my head. I live in a part
of the world where we get enough of those dropping rain on us.

Is that when I don't plug my iPad into my computer? That would make
sense, giving people a backup capability who don't do that.

But I buy apps from my computer, so I will continue to plug my iPad
into my computer periodically.

If I were to replace a lost, stolen, or broken iPad, and I didn't have
it backed up onto my computer, I suppose I would need to look up how
to restore from my cloud backup.

With iOS, even before version 5, when you download an iOS app to your
computer, it automatically gets downloaded to the iOS devices. (This is
optional, though.)

I just discovered a moment ago - my iTunes shows my iPad, even though
my iPad is upstairs. Apparently it is connected to my computer,
just wirelessly. So I really see no reason to connect it at this
time.

I did just change the backup selection to "Back up to this computer".

It has always worked exceptionally well for me.

Sometimes I download and have installed updates to apps on my iPad directly
from the iPad, at other times to and then from my laptop through iTunes. In
any case, it has on every count worked without a hitch.
