Yep, it's basically a completely new device. Some hacker might get the old
model to run the new software (in a similar way to the iPhone emaultor
running on Mac OS X), but it's unlikely there will ever be an official way.

On the surface and with only the quick look and limited details I've had
time to read so far, it seems like a step backwards, as does the horrible
new iPod Nano. :-\ Of course, Apple TV has always been classed as a
"hobby" project.

not without a shitload of work. it's much easier to spend $99 and get
the new one.

That's what I'm wondering. It would seem very doable.

And then there's the Netflix thing. Not as big a deal as it would have
been a year ago, before every tom, dick and BluRay player added it to
their offerings.

Which is most likely what I'll do after the dust settles.

They probably picked Beatles for the same reason that Nora Jones
performed at "It's Only Rock and Roll"

Nothing against Nora Jones, she's amazingly talented, but she's not Rock
and/or Roll.

Because then people wouldn't buy the new toy?

Not that many people own the existing model.

I expect Apple will continue selling it for at least the next year.

Once flash memory pricing drops to the point where Apple can justify
releasing an iPod model with at least 128 GB of flash memory, the
Classic could switch to using flash memory instead of a hard drive, or
would be deleted from the product lineup (with users with high capacity
requirements expected to buy the top end iPod Touch instead).
