Default Good and cheap OCR software for MacOS X 10.6+

Dear All,
I know I could have googled, read comments on the web, etc. but I am
sure your advice will be worth reading on csa2.

I don't have any OCR software now as I have a new job, Acrobat 8 is
lost for good. Now, I would like to find a reliable and cheap OCR
software for my Mac, based on OS X 10.6.

I have recently scanned my Yamaha MIC-A-001 manuals and that results
in a 173 MiB PDF... Ahem...

Any help and/or pointers would be useful to me, thank you in advance,
Antoine

I have found that the combination "good" and "inexpensive" does not exist
when it comes to OCR software.

Never the less, I have had some good success with TakOCR:

I've found ReadIris Pro 12 to be quite capable and not too
expensive. It is considerably faster than the Acrobat I used
to use.

It can convert an "image" .pdf file to an image-over-text file,
which makes it fully searchable while retaining the original
page images.

It can also convert an "image" .pdf file to a straight text .pdf,
which saves lots of space (if you are satisfied with the occasional
OCR error (usually caused by interspersed graphics).

Does your scanner come with software that might do OCR? I think HP has
OCR, though I never tried or used it (last time was with my Quickie
scanner back in the '90S :-)

Really good idea, I'll check that with the multi function printer/
scanner/blahblah I currently use. As I am trying to get a used Epson
GT-2500 scanner and that the seller does not find the CDs, it didn't
cross my mind to check on my other CDs.

Thanks for that,
Antoine

I downloaded the professional version of Vuescan and it allowed me to
use my older scanners with Lion. I havent tried the OCR on it yet
but, one drawback was that it was also $80 USD. The great aspect of
this program is that it supports over 1200 scanners. If you want more
info on it Antoine, let me know. It allows me to finally get back to
scanning and get the rest of these magazines up finally!
