Sent you a submission. Admittedly, I used a program called Jave to do
it but I did use an Apple2 ttf font to ensure that the result will
look ok on the real deal. Process was something along the lines of:

1) Find awesome photo from hard drive with decent contrast, large
features, etc
2) Trim out background (sky/clouds) and set background to black, trim
excess background details to focus on subject
3) Use JAVE to render ascii version after much tweaking and tuning of
the result
4) Manually pass over result to add better hilights, details, edges,
etc.
5) ???
6) Profit
