Default Classifying Apple II systems for inventory purposes

Hi, y'all!

Seeing the topic "Adapter card storage" makes me think it's time
to bring order out of the chaos that exists here. I started assigning
ID numbers to the IIs I have. The ID consists of a letter and a two
digit number. I started with 'P', for the Platinum IIe, but that
scheme fell apart when I found a couple II+ models. How about 'A' for
Apple I (not that I'll ever have one), 'B' for Apple II, 'C' for Apple
II+, 'D' for unenhanced IIe, 'E' for enhanced IIe, 'F' for platinum
IIe, 'G for IIc', 'H' for IIc+, 'J' for ROM 0 IIgs, 'K' for ROM 1 IIgs
and 'L' for ROM3 IIgs. Hmmm, if I use separate letters for all the
ROM versions of the IIgs, shouldn't I use separate letters for the
various ROM versions of the IIc? Comments, PLEASE...

I always liked this graphic of the timeline:

The IIc revisions (and the IIe, I suppose, too) are the only ones you
really need to worry about ROM versions. The IIc are of course 255,
0, 3, 4, and 5. I'm not sure what you'd call the IIe ROM revisions...
often they coincided with the case they were in, but upgrades are
always possible. Hmmm. You might need to have a classification for
the chassis vs. the ROM or even motherboard... like an early A2S1 that
got upgraded to II+ ROMs, an A2S3 B&H, or an IIe that got a IIgs
retrofit. This sounds like a fun database modeling project!

Depending on which database program you are using you could always
assign a numeric value for each type of machine. From there you could
use it as a common key to access the description from one file and the
details from a different file.

It might be informative to capture the motherboard revision in
addition to ROM version for a large collection, but there's a lot of
manual checking involved.

For what it's worth, it seems to me that any system that doesn't use C
for an Apple //c or G for an Apple IIGS (probably a ROM01) is going to
confuse people down the road. I see that E refers to an enchanced //e,
which is intuitive.

just a thought.
