BASUG/Apple2000 Magazine archive

The British Apple Systems User Group, renamed in 1986 to Apple2000, ran
continuously from 1981 to 1992, and was the National Apple User Group
for the UK. Over that period of time, they published regular magazines
and other publications, much of which may not have been seen outside of
the UK.

In the early years, the magazines were devoted exclusively to the Apple
II, but as the years progressed, they encompassed the Apple /// and the
Macintosh. Till the very end, all the many Apple computers were treated
equally, so coverage for both was always given in the magazines.

In parallel to the magazines and printed material, BASUG/Apple2000 ran a
bulletin board, which under various sysops, ran for most of the years,
and survived in the form of TABBS for some years.

Disk libraries were available to members, and the Apple II disk
libraries survive in the form of the TABBS CD-ROM available from
Syndicomm.

The BASUG/Apple2000 magazines and printed material have now been
scanned, and are online as PDF files. They are currently hosted on a
MobileMe web site, and will remain there as long as Apple deign to let
us keep it!

Thank you, Ewen, congratulations to your partner in that task and you.

Within the GS Club disks were four Apple 2000 disks that I have just
uploaded as an archive @ http://www.brutaldeluxe.fr/public/apple2000_disks.zip

Brilliant thanks Ewen. I used to get this in the late 80's early 90's,
so will be good to look through them again

> I'm really enjoying reading these, thank you...

I am glad everyone is enjoying them. They represent a considerable
amount of work that we did back then.

It was quite a challenge producing a magazine every two months, with a
newseltter in the intervening months!

I had lots of memories as I was scanning them, and had not realised how
much I had written over the years!

I don't think I ever knew there was a UK Apple II user base in the 80s
- maybe not even until today, when I started looking at these scans.

When I was a teen in the 80s and 90s and I'd buy gaming magazines, the
American and Australian ones included Apple II stuff, but the British
ones (which were the majority I bought) never mentioned the Apple II
once. I just assumed the Spectrum was the Apple II of the UK.

The first time I ever got a whiff of UK and Apple being in the same
place at the same itme was an article in one of the American or Aussie
mags about Douglas Adams and The HitchHikers Guide game.

In the early years, the British magazines certainly did cover the Apple
II, as well as the Commodore PET, and of course all the other computers
of that era. It was when the BBC computer appeared that things changed,
as that was also the era of the various Sinclair computers, such as the
ZX80, ZX81, and the Spectrum.

You must have come along to the magazines in the mid 80s, when things
were beginning to move to the IBM and Macintosh, and the magazines
changed their emphasis.

One of the best selling magazines at the time for Apple computers,
AppleUser, even changed its name to MacUser to show this trend.

Yeah, my earliest British mag is probably a Computer Gamer from '86.
