I thought it would be behind the glass back, but it isn't.

The LED flash-light is begind the glass. But the lens itself goes
through a hole in the glass. There is a small metal ring that separates
the glass from the top most layer of the lens.

My sony ericsson phone was smaller but thicker, and its lens was (by
far) superior. It also had a real mechnical focusing mechanism for
greater accuracy. (probably not possible on a thin phone like the iphone)
